How to Help an Alcoholic

Excerpted from Raise the Bottom (page 108)

“Our challenge is: since alcoholics do have to hit bottom, how can we raise the bottom?” Aaron continued. “Rock bottom, the end of the road, is the classic image that persists: the skid row bum wandering into the Salvation Army meeting, that sort of thing. What if, instead, we think of the ‘bottom’ as the turning point at which the alcoholic’s perceptions change? Looking at it that way, the goal of employers and friends becomes to raise the bottom, to avoid the despair of rock bottom.”

“Okay, but now for the obvious question: How do we raise the bottom?” Jason asked.

“Two words,” Aaron said: “Stop enabling.”

“I got sober when I was beaten teachable.”
